PADI Sidemount Instructor Training Course

"A PADI side mount instructor course that will stand out from the others"   Back to Courses

Please view my student level course and why sidemount pages before continuing with this page.

Please note: The best way to prepare yourself for this course is to take the student level course first and then gain experience diving in sidemount configuration (recommend 50 to 100 dives). Then complete the instructor course, another option I make available only to experienced technical instructors; take the student and instructor course together and then I recommend before you start teaching you build up the high level sidemount experience level required to offer future students a safe and valuable sidemount course. "There is no substitute for time spent in the water"

Why do this course..?

Sidemount is more than just an equipment change...Benefits for the PADI Instructor are;

  • All the student course benefits...
  • Be able to offer the latest specialty certification that everyone is asking for.
  • Sick of carrying twinsets, find out how sidemount can totally replace backmount in your centre.
  • By taking this instructor course you can offer all your DSAT - PADI TecRec courses in sidemount configuration.
  • Take your training with someone who actively dives sidemount configuration all around the world.
  • "I personally have not donned a twinset since February 2008" Over 2 yrs in just sidemount ;)
What will I be able to teach after this course..?

This instructor course covers how to organize, promote and conduct the PADI Sidemount Diver Distinctive Specialty course for both the (Sidemount diver single cylinder) and the (SM diver twin cylinder) course options. Please Note: You will receive my PADI distinctive specialty instructor outline and all my custom powerpoint lesson guides, when you start the course. Previews of the materials area available, just drop me an email showing your interest.

What will we do..?

Course duration - 2 days with 2 training dives & 2 open water dives

  • Day 1 - Classroom, equipment workshop and skills training dives.
  • Day 2 - Open water dives and extra classroom (if needed).

Each candidate will...

  • Present academic topic(s) (presentations) from my distinctive specialty diver course outline and custom powerpoint slides.
  • Understand the purpose and goals and explain the course standards and procedures.
  • Review and setup all student diver and instructor equipment required for training courses.
  • Demonstrate mastery of all knowledge development and water skill performance requirements for both distinctive specialty diver course options.
  • Conduct  an open water teaching assignment and demonstrate all open water performance requirements for the sidemount courses.
  • Learn how to conduct all course segments, gain all my training tips and tricks.
  • Will conduct a marketing and promotional workshop, find out how to best use this specialty in your market.

Recommend: If you are looking to take the student and instructor course together, you may want at least a day between the courses to further practice your sidemounting skills. During the instructor course you will be required to show role model demonstrations of all the skills you learn't during the student level course.

Once you have completed the instructor course I will advise you to build up your sidemounting skill level and suggest you make at least 50 dives in sidemount before running your first sidemount course, that way you will have developed the necessary muscle memory and experience to offer your students a sidemount course of value.

What do I need to start and what's the cost..?

You need to be; a teaching status PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (or higher), certified in the SM Diver (twin cylinder) distinctive specialty course (or equivalent rating) and be at least 18 years old.

Cost... Due to my current schedule I am "on request" visiting many countries worldwide. I have a sidemount training proposal for overseas clients which can be emailed. Please contact me and we can go through the options.

What equipment do I require..?
Below is a list of the equipment you require for this course, I may be able to provide the equipment for you. If you have your own I can help you customise it to get the most from it and the course. Dive Rite Nomad Expedition Harness/Rig with the Armadillo butt plate. Video shows incorrect trimming of sidemount cylinders, when using the "door handles" to mount the rear of the cylinder the base of the cylinder rides to high. After adjustment trim is corrected, note not using any attachments on the rear of the harness or butt plate.
