Is the multi-use sidemount systems for me..?"  Back to main page

I highly recommend taking training when learning to sidemount dive, do not be one of the people who tries to teach themselves. If you do you again will find that, you spent a lot of dives tweaking your system when you could easily take a short course and advance your skill level to the same or even better than someone having done 50 sidemount dives in as little as 5 dives with an "experienced" sidemount diving instructor (see course section)

During a sidemount training course you instructor should be talking to you about being correctly weighted based on the dive being undertaken the environmental conditions and the exposure suit and cylinders you will require.

This generally means the amount of lift you would require from your sidemount BCD will vary. The lift required can be less if diving just in a wetsuit and using aluminum cylinders compared to diving in a drysuit and diving with steel cylinders, the idea being you need a BCD or wing that will provide enough lift to support you at the surface with your cylinders full and still support you at the deepest point of your dive, as you dive you then need less and less lift from your BCD as the air in cylinders is being used etc. This can mean that a 50lbs (22 kilo) wing can offer way more lift than is necessary and you may find this then is not as streamlined and efficient as a modular type of BCD found on "sidemount only" systems.

If you are looking for something that may suit all the types of diving you may do, then these BCD and harness systems below are worth looking at. With any "one does all" there has to be a compromise somewhere along the line, this usually means size and features are sometimes more than is needed.

If you are looking to teach sidemount diving, then these "multi-use" sidemount systems might be the best way to go, especially the ones that have C.E approval which all dive instructors working in Europe must be have when instructing other divers during training courses.

Below displays the current commercially available products;

Hollis - S.M.S 100 Sidemount (this unit has C.E approval)

Manufacturers description; Bulletproof Construction, Single & Dual Options, Innovative 360 Wing, Low Profile, 52# Lift. The butt plate is integrated to the harness and can not be removed.

Advantages - You can choose either single or dual bladder BCD, this makes it a good option for technical divers. As this BCD has a true 360* wing design not a horse shoe like most others it does offer some benefits in regards to your trim. This can be used for backmount twinset diving, you just need a backplate. It can also be used for single cylinder and sidemounts.

Disadvantages - The wing has 52 lbs of lift, which is quite a lot if you do not require that much.

More information on the harness can be found by (clicking here)

Golem Gear - Armadillo Sidemount Exploration Harness (this unit does not have C.E approval)

Advantages - Good for backmounted single or (twinset) double cylinders as well as a sidemount system. Please note it has only 34 lbs of lift which I personally like, a lot of other manufactured sidemount harness systems have around 60 lbs of lift which can make them in my opinion to bulky and not suitable for single cylinder use.

Disadvantages - Only available as a single bladder BCD, so if doing technical diving you will need to use a drysuit or carry another approved backup BCD. (extra lift might be required if diving multiple steel cylinders and or with a drysuit).

More information on the harness can be found by (clicking here) - Download the product manual (click here

OMS - Tesseract BCD and Profile Sidemount System (dual bladder)

Advantages - Harness and BCD are separate, good it allows you to choose a suitable “basic” OMS harness to fit with the BCD, allows for easy customisation, adding extra d-ring’s to waist strap etc. Good option for technical diving whether in a wetsuit or drysuit, due to redundancy bladder. Incorporates the latest “donut wing design” meaning 360* bladder.

Disadvantages - Available as a dual bladder BCD only, has a massive 60lbs of lift, will require extra weight just to sink the bcd on empty. I found whilst trying out this system I did not require hardly any of the lift it provided making the wing quite bulky in water.

More information on the harness can be found by (clicking here)

Oxycheq - RECON I and RECON II Sidemount Harness (Please note: I have not yet had chance to test this model)

Advantages - It is available as a single bladder (RECON I) or dual bladder (RECON II) BCD, so can be a good option for technical divers, depending which model you get. As this BCD has a true 360* wing design not a horse shoe like most others it does offer some benefits in regards to your trim.

Disadvantages - The wing has 55 lbs of lift, which is quite a lot but manufacturer assures you that due to it being a 360* wing and very narrow with reduction straps on outside of BCD that it is good for backmounted single or (twinset) double cylinders as well as a sidemount cylinders..

More information on the harness can be found by (clicking here) - Download the product manual (click here)

Diverite - Nomad Expedition BC Sidemount Harness (this unit has C.E approval)

Advantages - It is available as a single bladder or dual bladder BCD, so can be good option for technical divers, depending which model you get.

Disadvantages - Current version has 60 lbs of lift, older version had 50 lbs (which I preferred). This harness is can be used for backmounted (twinset) double cylinders as well as a sidemount system, you may read it can be used a single cylinder BCD but with 60lbs of lift, you may find you get a lot of the cylinder “taco” effect

You can get this with the butt plate but you may not use it, see sidemount harness (modifications) on my equipment homepage.

Dive Rite Nomad Expedition Harness/Rig with the Armadillo butt plate. Video shows incorrect trimming of sidemount cylinders, when using the "door handles" to mount the rear of the cylinder the base of the cylinder rides to high. After adjustment trim is corrected, note not using any attachments on the rear of the harness or butt plate.

Calendar shows where I will be and duration of my time there. If I am in your area and you want to join a course, contact me for locations. If you see any dates free and would like me to visit your dive centre or location, drop me an email with location, course interest and possible dates.
Sidemount is by far the best configuration to use for developing every divers essential skill set. This video highlights what is covered with the side mount essentials training. There is a PADI and PADI TecRec option for divers wanting certification and a non-certification option for experienced divers.
Please note: Single Cylinder (is no longer offered as a stand alone course). It will be included as a workshop with an "optional training dive" with all of the above courses.
